Best Android read aloud apps
Half the best text to speech lists are secretly iPhone lists. If you live on Android, the stack looks different, especially once you care about usable free TTS versus another subscription.
Same ElevenLabs catalog as iOS/web, huge Play install base, camera OCR, word-synced reading view, sync across devices. Free ~10 hrs/month of voices that actually sound premium. Ultra adds offline downloads and higher caps at a lower sticker than Speechify. Occasional crash/buffering complaints on Play, still the daily driver I'd install first for “listen to my stuff and enjoy it” on Android.
The cult answer when people ask “what's like @Voice on iOS?”, because this is @Voice. Free + ads or $15 Premium once. Any installed TTS engine, speech replacements for novel names, reading lists with auto-advance, Follow-Next for web serials, desktop Connector (Chrome/Edge/Brave/Firefox), optional cloud engines, Android Auto plugin, de-Googled APK. The UI is dense and takes learning, in my experience; feature depth for general listening (fiction, web, files) still looks unmatched on Android to me. If you want to own your Android TTS stack, I'd start here.

Works as a cross-device daily driver if you already bought in; don't pick it for Android-only bargain hunting.
Share a PDF from Files/Drive → listen on a walk with citation skipping and section jumps. Android is first-class, not an afterthought. ~$39/year after a card trial. Store ratings are lower on Play than iOS in some snapshots; still the cheap paid academic specialist on Android.

Matter still has no Android app, Reader does. Save articles/PDFs/EPUBs, highlight, listen (online TTS only), sync with the full Readwise stack. You're paying ~$10/mo annual for PKM + inbox, not for best-in-class Android TTS. Right pick when Android + serious read-later is the combo.
Android finally got Premium AI Voices (mid-2026). Save → sync → Speak works for article queues; CarPlay-class listening is more of an iOS story. Free system Speak still exists. Not a textbook/PDF academic tool, keep it for news and longreads on Android.
