Calm read-it-later with free system Speak and optional Premium AI Voices, still the classic save-later pipeline that survived Pocket.
Instapaper is still Instapaper, save article, read later, don't get cute. TTS ("Speak") is a feature of that pipeline, not a full document TTS suite. After Pocket died, a lot of people landed here; AI Voices on Premium (late 2025 iOS, mid-2026 Android) finally made Speak something I'd renew for, not just tolerate.
System voices: fine offline, kind of "phone TTS." Premium AI Voices (~17 streaming voices across EN-US/UK, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Hindi, Spanish, Portuguese…) are the reason people on r/instapaper said they resubscribed. Still not Matter-HD or ElevenLabs for me, but a real step up from pre-2025 Speak.
System vs AI picker in the new player. AI set is curated, not 1,000-voice theatre.
Floating player, 0.5x-2.0x (narrower than apps that brag about 4-5x). CarPlay Speak support. Playlists for back-to-back articles are a Premium-associated thing, early Pocket migrants called playlist UX clunky before the redesign; it's been improving.
Staff confirmed on Reddit: AI Voices need network (streaming). Airplane mode → fall back to system voices with downloaded articles. Plan accordingly for flights.
PDF reader is Premium. Still not a textbook/academic TTS engine in my view. I wouldn't pick Instapaper to listen to scanned monographs.
This is the job. Parsing is reliable for normal articles. Unlimited saves on free.
Notes/highlights exist; free caps notes (~5/mo). Unlimited on Premium. Not a Readwise second-brain.
Sync is table stakes and it works. Folders/tags, permanent archive on Premium, full-text search on Premium.
Offline reading yes; offline nice TTS only via system voices.
Clean article reader is the brand. Instapaper 10 brought Liquid Glass-ish chrome and fonts like Atkinson Hyperlegible. Speak lives in the article menu with a floating player (playlist + voice picker after the redesign).
Android app kept pace; AI Voices took longer to arrive but landed. Same save → sync → Speak idea.
Web archive / reading is calm and boring in the good way. Rebuilt site recently. Not where I do most listening, but triage works.
Best-in-class simple article view. Speed reading mode on Premium if that's your thing. No feature bloat.
Save from extension → opens everywhere → Speak. Zero onboarding essay. After trying Readwise's everything-app, coming back here feels like putting on an old jacket.
iOS, Android, web, browser save extensions, CarPlay. Survived ownership drama for years, longevity is part of the sell after Pocket.
