Matter vs Speechify
Audio-first read-it-later with excellent HD voices for articles and newsletters. The Apple listen-later pick when the pile is web reading.

Voice quality
This is the selling point. HD voices are comfortable for full articles, people compare them favourably to Instapaper/Pocket system TTS and often to Readwise's listen mode. I've done whole New Yorker-length pieces on a walk without wanting to turn it off, which is rare for TTS.
Occasional weird stress on a word, and I've seen people mention little "period" glitches. Not a dealbreaker for me.
Premium voices are comfortable for long English sessions. ADHD / dyslexia users on Reddit often say this is the one that finally stuck. Free voices are the usual robotic demo tier.
Voice selection
Huge catalog, 60+ languages on paid marketing, celebrity voices for the ads. Day to day I pick a boring clear voice and leave it there. Speed marketing goes up to 5x (sometimes higher in copy), most humans live around 2-2.5x.
Listening controls
Can start TTS from a mid-article spot on mobile (wish that was on web too). Playlist-style listening for clearing a backlog during a commute is the actual workflow. Word highlighting while it speaks; there's an "audio highlight" trick (volume buttons / gesture) so you can mark a sentence without looking, MacStories-era detail that still sells me on listen mode.
Document processing
PDFs
You can save PDFs, but I wouldn't call Matter a PDF listening tool. App Store reviewers with dyslexia literally begged for proper PDF TTS, that's not the strength here. For research PDFs I'd use something else.
Handles a lot of PDFs with OCR options. Complex multi-column academic layouts can still get messy, same caveat as every generalist TTS. Dedicated paper-listener apps go deeper on citation mute and figure handling when journals are the whole job.
Web articles
Core job. Extensions for Chrome/Safari, save-later library that's uncapped on free. This is what Matter is for.
Browser extension is a core strength. Select text or listen to pages without the full upload ritual.
OCR & scans
Scan & Listen / photo OCR is a frequent reason students pick Speechify for textbooks. Works well enough that people stay despite the price.
Office docs
Docs / mixed school files are part of the mainstream pitch. Broad format net.
Listening workflow
Bookmarks & notes
Highlighting is fluid on iOS. Premium unlocks unlimited highlights + export to Readwise / Notion / Obsidian / etc. Free is more limited on the knowledge-export side.
Cross-device sync
iPhone / iPad / web sync is solid for an Apple-heavy setup. No Android app, if you're dual-platform, that's the end of the story.
Sync across phone, web, desktop, extension is why people pay for the ecosystem vs a one-device free app.
Offline listening
Offline exists on paid plans depending on how you've downloaded/generated, don't assume airplane mode Just Works without checking.
Automation
Newsletter / Gmail sync + following writers is the "inbox that isn't email" pitch. If your life is Substacks and long articles, Matter's queue feels purpose-built. RSS exists on Premium too, some paid users say it's thin vs a real RSS client (missing items). I treat Matter as newsletter + article audio, not NetNewsWire.
UI / UX
iOS app
The iPhone app is where Matter feels finished. Clean typography, gesture highlighting, night mode that doesn't look like an afterthought. Saving from Safari just works. I've bounced between Matter and Readwise Reader a few times and Matter still wins on "I want to sit on the couch and clear my queue."
iOS app is a primary surface for commute queues. Generally more stable than Android in complaint tallies I've seen.
Android app
Android works but reviews cite more crashes / sync weirdness than iOS. If you're Android-only, try before you annual-bill.
Web app
There's a web app and it's fine for triage / keyboard-y stuff. Not as polished as iOS. Some power users on MPU Talk basically said they'd pick Readwise if they lived on a Mac all day, Matter's desktop story is "open the browser," which is… okay, not great.
Web + desktop feels modern. Library and player are clear. Easy to start listening without reading a manual. Lots of AI-summary / study chrome around the edges if you want it.
Reading view
Article parsing is genuinely good. Paywalled pieces sometimes come through more complete than I expect (within whatever their save path allows). Photos/captions can be inconsistent, sometimes images land, sometimes captions get treated as body text, which is annoying when you're listening.
Ease of use
Doesn't dump a thousand features on you. Newsletter sync + tags + search on free, audio behind Premium. Easy to understand what you're paying for.
Consumer onboarding is excellent. "Listen now" is short. Power features exist but don't block the happy path, until the paywall does.

Free tier
Actually usable: uncapped library, parsing, tags, search, themes. You can live on free if you don't need HD audio or newsletter inbox features.
Free is tightly capped, robotic voices, limited speed, enough to demo not to live on. Premium voice word/hour caps burn heavy users fast ("blew through my limit in a few days" type posts).
Paid value
Premium is roughly $8/mo or ~$80/yr on the App Store lately (older marketing said $60/yr, that number drifts). You're mostly paying for HD TTS + newsletter sync + unlimited highlights/integrations. There's also Pro/Patron SKUs floating around; API/CLI docs want Pro. Worth it if you listen a lot; steep if you only save links.
Premium commonly lands around $29/mo or ~$139/yr (sales and referral codes bounce that number). Student discounts via UNiDAYS sometimes. Worth it if you listen daily across devices; brutal if you're casual.
Separate Studio product for creating/publishing audio, don't confuse Studio credits with listening Premium. Easy to buy the wrong thing.
Limits & upsells
What I keep seeing on Reddit and Trustpilot: the free trial often wants a card, rolls into an annual plan, and the cancel path feels confusing to a lot of people, with reports of charges after they thought they were done. That may not be unique to Speechify in this industry, but they show up in those threads a lot. My habit is to cancel straight away if I'm only testing, and I still set a calendar reminder. Refund windows look short from what I've read.

Premium AI Q&A on articles (they've partnered around Perplexity-style co-reading). Handy for "what was this piece arguing", not something I lean on every day. The TTS is still the reason I'd renew.
AI summaries & study aids
Summaries, chatty study helpers, AI podcast-style features show up in the Premium pitch. Fine for skimming; I treat them as optional polish. The listen loop is still the product.
