Voice quality
Online neural voices labeled (Natural) are the ones that matter, Microsoft's modern TTS, dozens of languages/accents (named voices like Alonso, Yunxia, etc.). Legacy non-Natural voices sound dramatically worse; skip them. Not ElevenLabs expressive range, but for free browser TTS it's genuinely listenable for long articles.
Premium voices are comfortable for long English sessions. ADHD / dyslexia users on Reddit often say this is the one that finally stuck. Free voices are the usual robotic demo tier.
Voice selection
Long voice dropdown, regional accents (e.g. multiple French variants), speed control. Offline mode only keeps a few voices, plan on network for the good set.
Huge catalog, 60+ languages on paid marketing, celebrity voices for the ads. Day to day I pick a boring clear voice and leave it there. Speed marketing goes up to 5x (sometimes higher in copy), most humans live around 2-2.5x.
Offline audio
Offline Read aloud exists but with a tiny voice set. No MP3 export library. You're listening inside Edge, not building an audiobook stash.
Document processing
PDFs
Open a PDF in Edge's built-in viewer → same Read aloud shortcut/toolbar. Text-layer PDFs feed cleanly; this is where Edge beats Chrome's built-in story. Multi-column academic nightmares and image-only scans still fail like any dumb text-layer reader, no citation mute, no figure summaries. For "this PDF already has a text layer and I just want it spoken," it's excellent and free.
Handles a lot of PDFs with OCR options. Complex multi-column academic layouts can still get messy, same caveat as every generalist TTS. Dedicated paper-listener apps go deeper on citation mute and figure handling when journals are the whole job.
Web articles
Works on almost any page (Read aloud) vs article-shaped pages (Immersive Reader). Selection read-aloud for comments/sidebars you actually care about. No save-later archive, combine with collections/favourites or another read-later if you need a queue.
Browser extension is a core strength. Select text or listen to pages without the full upload ritual.
OCR & scans
Scan & Listen / photo OCR is a frequent reason students pick Speechify for textbooks. Works well enough that people stay despite the price.
Office docs
Docs / mixed school files are part of the mainstream pitch. Broad format net.
Listening workflow
Bookmarks & notes
Not a listening library. No cross-device TTS position sync as a product feature, no playlists, no export. Copilot chat/summarise in Reading mode is the "study extra" where available, still browser-session thinking.
Cross-device sync
Sync across phone, web, desktop, extension is why people pay for the ecosystem vs a one-device free app.
Offline listening
Offline exists on paid plans depending on how you've downloaded/generated, don't assume airplane mode Just Works without checking.
UI / UX
iOS app
iOS app is a primary surface for commute queues. Generally more stable than Android in complaint tallies I've seen.
Android app
Android works but reviews cite more crashes / sync weirdness than iOS. If you're Android-only, try before you annual-bill.
Web app
Ctrl+Shift+U (Windows) or Cmd+Shift+U (Mac) / right-click → Read aloud / ⋯ → More tools. Floating toolbar: play, voice options, speed. Words highlight as they speak; page dims slightly. Immersive Reader / Reading mode (F9 or book icon) strips ads/sidebars, adds line focus, syllable tools, picture dictionary, then Read aloud from there. Feels native because it is native.
Web + desktop feels modern. Library and player are clear. Easy to start listening without reading a manual. Lots of AI-summary / study chrome around the edges if you want it.
Reading view
Immersive Reader / Reading mode is the polish layer, focus lines, fonts, backgrounds, Copilot summarise/explain in markets where Copilot is on. Reading mode is desktop-oriented; mobile Edge still has Read aloud without the full Reading mode suite (per Microsoft's notes).
Ease of use
Zero install beyond Edge. Select text → Read aloud selection for partial pages. PDF toolbar has its own Read aloud control when policy allows. Learning curve is "where is the menu," not another account + credit pack.
Consumer onboarding is excellent. "Listen now" is short. Power features exist but don't block the happy path, until the paywall does.

Edge on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android. Read aloud exists on mobile Edge too, but desktop is where it feels complete, Immersive Reader / Reading mode extras and background-listening polish are thinner on phones (Microsoft notes feature variance by device). Org policy can disable it (ReadAloudEnabled). You're locked into Edge as the browser, that's the whole trade.

Free tier
Free with Edge. No TTS subscription, no character meter for Read aloud itself. Best $0 neural web/PDF listen if you'll use Microsoft's browser. Copilot-enhanced Reading mode extras may depend on account/market, core Read aloud doesn't require paying Speechify money.
Free is tightly capped, robotic voices, limited speed, enough to demo not to live on. Premium voice word/hour caps burn heavy users fast ("blew through my limit in a few days" type posts).
Paid value
There is no Edge Read Aloud SKU. Value is "already paid $0." If you need libraries, offline audiobook files, citation-aware academic parsing, or non-Edge browsers, you still need another product, this is the free floor, not the full stack.
Premium commonly lands around $29/mo or ~$139/yr (sales and referral codes bounce that number). Student discounts via UNiDAYS sometimes. Worth it if you listen daily across devices; brutal if you're casual.
Separate Studio product for creating/publishing audio, don't confuse Studio credits with listening Premium. Easy to buy the wrong thing.
Limits & upsells
What I keep seeing on Reddit and Trustpilot: the free trial often wants a card, rolls into an annual plan, and the cancel path feels confusing to a lot of people, with reports of charges after they thought they were done. That may not be unique to Speechify in this industry, but they show up in those threads a lot. My habit is to cancel straight away if I'm only testing, and I still set a calendar reminder. Refund windows look short from what I've read.
